Amy Unfred, Private Tutor
I am available as a private tutor in the greater Eugene area. Although my specialty is elementary age students, I have worked with a wide variety of ages, from preschool to adult. I have an extensive background in literacy and early reading in particular, although I have a wide knowledge base in multiple subjects.
Teaching Philosophy
I believe that students learn best when they are engaged and interested in the material. The teacher's role is to foster a love of learning and provide the students with the tools they need to succeed. Education is not about simply imparting facts, but helping students to understand the world around them, questioning and experimenting to build their own knowledge. Truly effective tutoring is not about memorizing facts or completing homework assignments, but rather about building skills, competency, and confidence, and helping students realize their true potential.
Teaching and Tutoring Background
I have been licensed in Oregon to teach early childhood education and elementary school since 2005. I am also licensed to teach English as a second language, and I have training and background in working with gifted children, as well. I did my student teaching in a 4th/5th grade combined class, and have worked with all other elementary ages during my time as a student teacher and later a substitute teacher.
While employed at Sylvan Learning Center, I worked with children of all ages, from four and a half to high school, on subjects including math, reading, and general homework help. I have also worked with adults preparing to take an Army placement test, and was trained to teach beginning reading to early readers, ages four to eight. I have volunteered with children of a variety of ages as well, planning both recreational and educational activities. My volunteer work includes assisting and teaching guest lessons in high school writing and humanities classrooms.
I received my Bachelor of Arts (English major, music minor) from Willamette University in 2001 and my Master of Arts in Teaching from Pacific University in 2005, where I also received my ESOL endorsement and TAG training.
Tutoring Curriculum
I can provide a wide range of curricula for various ages, including:
- Preschool and kindergarten readiness
- Early reading and reading readiness
- Early math concepts and elementary math
- Geometry and algebraic concepts through middle school
- Reading skills, comprehension, and writing process, from elementary through high school
- Educational enrichment for elementary and middle school
I can meet with you and design a curriculum and education plan that meets your child's needs. I can also assist with understanding and completing homework assignments for students of most ages, or working on basic study skills and time management. Homework help is a lower cost alternative, although in many cases your child will benefit most from a specialized curriculum plan.
